|2011 Yorba Linda Country Club Wheelchair Tournament|
The Adaptive Athletics Association organized the first wheelchair tennis tournament at the Yorba Linda Country Club in four decades over the weekend of November 5th and 6th under the direction of Greg Jablonski the head tournament pro at YLCC. 31 players spanned over 14 divisions hosted by the lovely 8 court facility at the club.
Forecasted rain had both players and organizers concerned that the event could happen at all, yet blue skies prevailed Saturday, and together the consensus was to push on as hard as we could that day to get as many matches completed before the predicted rain to follow on Sunday. Matches started at 9 a.m. and completed at 10:30p.m. under the lights with temperatures in the 40s, only three matches were abandoned out of the 45 or more scheduled.
The players that participated showed the true grit and strength of world class athletes, as many of them competed in four or more matches. The effort given by all may be a record breaker of some sorts that the Yorba Linda Country Club Wheelchair Tournament was wrapped up from start to finish before the rain fell on Sunday. Tom Ayala, David Eads, Antonio Vico, Ken Straiton, Nicole Saltzburg, and Eliel-Anthony Burroughs claimed the titles of Men's Open, Men's A, Men's B, Men's C, Women's and Juniors singles titles respectively. David Buck/Tony Lara, David Eads/Sergio Naduville, Hadyanto Sutandar/Antonio Vico, and Ken Straiton/Jaime Martinez captured the Men's Open, Men's A, Men's B and Men's C doubles titles stated in order of division.
The players and organizers although exhausted and tired both agreed that the tournament was a smash, and the Yorba Linda Country Club who were truly gracious host are excited to begin talks of what may come in the future. The crystal trophies, tennis Channel laden goodie bags, valet tennis chair service, and Saturday night player dinner/social was a great start for year one. Thank you once again, from the Adaptive Athletics Association and Yorba Linda Country Club to all who participated in making this event what it was. As we look forward to future events we wish you all a Happy Holiday Season!
