The 2013 Southern California Open hosted 36 players at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens in Indian Wells, California. As the tournament approached Southern California was being hit with its first major storm of the year and anxious moments led up to the cancellation of Friday matches, however as the rain lightened and gave way to sunshine the tournament went on and good weather prevailed for the remainder of the weekends competition and all divisions were able to produce this year’s Southern California Open Champions.
In the Men’s Open Singles Division, San Diego native Steve Baldwin prevailed over the rest of the field defeating Anthony Anderson from Seattle in the Final, and Baldwin teamed up with Michael Foulks to defeat Marty Anderson and Tom Ayala in the doubles finale.
In the Men’s A Singles Division, Greg Hasterok proved to be too much for the competition as he manhandled his opponents defeating the number one and two seeds in claiming his first title of the new season. Hasterok paired up with Jesse Warren to claim the Men’s A Doubles title as well.
Up and comer Jim Ilg playing in his first tournament since the Pacific Northwest Championships stormed through the Men’s B Division opposition to claim his first title against Denise Esrey of Northern California, and in a rematch of the Yorba Linda Country Club Wheelchair Tournament B Doubles Final, Sherman Schneller and Ken Straiton bested Esrey and her partner Alycia Busciglio once again to claim yet another title.
In the Men’s C Division Southern California stalwarts Mark Jones and Alan Salceda faced of once again with Jones defeating Salceda the number one seed in a straight set finale. The veterans played host to up and coming juniors Henry Reyes and Juan Solis who paired up with a veteran and faced off in the Men’s C Doubles Final. With Jones and Reyes finishing on top to claim the Doubles Title.
All-in-all the second Southern California Open hosted by the Adaptive Athletics Association was a success and we look forward to improving our events in honor of your continued support.
